Pro Athletes Marc Dubrick and Vittoria Mello Claim Victory at 2023 Escape From Alcatraz™ Triathlon

SAN FRANCISCO – (June 11, 2023) On Saturday, June 10, the action-packed weekend commenced with the Aquathlon, a thrilling event that saw Cedric Callebaut and MacKenzie MacDonald emerge triumphant in the men's and women's divisions, respectively. With its growing popularity, the Aquathlon, now in its third year, provided an exhilarating prelude to the highly anticipated official triathlon scheduled for Sunday. Participants braved a challenging 750-meter swim followed by a demanding 5-kilometer run, culminating in a thrilling finish at Marina Green.

On Sunday, June 11 the City by the Bay welcomed nearly 2,000 athletes who took on the iconic race. Marc Dubrick from (Glen Ellyn, Illinois) and Vittoria Mello from (Fortaleza, Brazil) took the win in the women's and men's divisions. The grueling race in its 42nd year featured a 1.5-mile swim from Alcatraz Island to the shoreline of Marina Green, followed by an 18-mile twisting bike ride through the Presidio, an 8-mile trail run out to Baker Beach and back, and ended with 200-plus-step Sand Ladder to the finish line being cheered by thousands of spectators.

“This is definitely the biggest win of my career. As a rookie to Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon, I tried to play on my strengths as a strong swimmer so I definitely pushed myself at the start of the race and got a good enough gap between other competitors and just kept pushing. I love the sport and being able to compete again and hopefully, this leads to bigger opportunities down the road. It was challenging from beginning to end,” said Marc Dubrick.

The race welcomed Olympians, world champions, ardent age groupers, and triathletes to San Francisco. This year the weather was favorable compared to last year’s rain pour, the sun shined from time to time reminding athletes of the picturesque beauty of the bay. Marc Dubrick was the first out of the water today, followed by the 2022 first-place champion Eric Lagerstrom who tied with Miguel Mattox on the swim portion. The race went over the five-hour mark with our top competitors finishing shortly after the two-hour mark.

“The sand ladder posed the greatest challenge in the race for me today but this race was great to be a part of leading the way for my aspirations to secure qualification for the upcoming Olympics again, thereby carrying forward our proud tradition," said professional athlete Vittoria Mello. A remarkable highlight of the event occurred as Mello crossed the finish line, where her partner, professional athlete Danilo Pimentel, warmly greeted her and presented her with the well-deserved medal. Pimental himself emerged as one of the top performers in this year's competition.

Throughout the weekend, local, regional, and international spectators enjoyed the race firsthand from Marina Green cheering on competitors from 50 states and over 50 countries. The Marina Green provided a fun setting for pre-race activities, including the complimentary two-day fitness festival where guests were welcomed to explore merchandise from our sponsors including Sports Basement, Aquasphere, and Kitbrix, among others; food trucks; a beer and wine garden hosted by R.O.C.K (Real Options for City Kids) with all proceeds benefiting the organization; experiential displays and sample products including items from official Hydration Partner, Prime, a Logan Paul and KSI founded company.
