Escape from Alcatraz™ Triathlon Set for Exciting Return to San Francisco Bay May 31 through June 1, 2025

SAN FRANCISCO – (Sept. 17, 2024) The legendary Escape from Alcatraz™ Triathlon is set to make a return to the streets and waters of San Francisco on Sunday, June 1. Organized by IMG, a global sports, events and representation company, the iconic race will be celebrating its 44th year in the scenic Bay Area where over 10,000 athletes are anticipated to vie for one of the 2,000 coveted spots through a Random Drawing. Registration for the Random Drawing opens on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 9:30 am PST (Pacific Standard Time) and will run through Friday, Dec. 13 at 11:59 p.m. PST (Pacific Standard Time).

To kick-off the exhilarating weekend, attendees will have the opportunity to cheer on their favorite professional triathletes at the San Francisco T100 Triathlon marking the much-anticipated return of the Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO) T100 World Tour to the Escape weekend. Scheduled for Saturday, May 31, the pro athletes will take on the challenging course once again as they embark on a 2k swim, 80k bike and 18k run, promising a day of thrilling competition and elite athletic performances for all to enjoy.

“Escape From Alcatraz is one of the world’s most celebrated triathlons and it delivered in spades on its first appearance as part of the new T100 Triathlon World Tour. It gave us two high quality races involving the best triathletes going head-to-head over an iconic course, with Taylor Knibb putting on a masterclass in the women’s race and then Marten Van Riel, Kyle Smith and Rico Bogen leaving it all out there to produce a spectacular three-way sprint finish in the men’s,” said Sam Renouf, Professional Triathletes Organisation CEO. “Our objective in partnering with IMG had been to cement both our professional and amateur races at the very pinnacle of the sport. I think we made a great start in year one and we look forward to building the partnership out further in year two.”

As the weekend continues on to Sunday, the historic Escape race will bring together a bold group of competitors, comprised of passionate age groupers and challenged athletes from around the globe, representing over 60 countries and all 50 states. Participants will face a demanding course, beginning with a 1.5-mile swim from Alcatraz Island, followed by an 18-mile bike ride through the Presidio, and culminating with a grueling 8-mile run to Baker Beach, which includes the notorious 200-step Sand Ladder. Steeped in the storied history of Alcatraz as an infamous prison, this prestigious event pushes athletes to their limits, testing their resilience and skill as they conquer this daunting course.

“We are delighted to celebrate another year of the renowned Escape race in the Bay Area," said Jennifer Lau, Vice President, Action Sports, IMG. "The excitement is further amplified with the return of the San Francisco T100 Triathlon. This partnership with the PTO not only elevates the competition but also enhances the overall experience for both athletes and spectators, affirming the event's status as a cornerstone in the triathlon calendar. Hosting this event annually allows us to continually showcase the remarkable endurance and teamwork that define both the sport and our community.”

Throughout the weekend, Marina Green will become a bustling hub of activity for spectators to enjoy while cheering on the athletes. As the central location for both the race finish and the transition area, it offers an up-close view of all the action. Adding to the excitement, fans will be welcome to explore the complimentary Fitness Festival, featuring lifestyle, health, and fitness brands, a variety of culinary options from food trucks and interactive activities for all ages - making it a must-attend event for both the local community and visitors alike.
