Escape From Alcatraz™ Triathlon Announces Line-Up of Professional Athletes Set to Compete in the 2023 Race

Among the pro line-up is returning 2022 champion Eric Lagerstrom from the male pro division among others

SAN FRANCISCO – (May 10, 2023) IMG, a global leader in sports and events, announced the pro field today for the 42nd Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon. The line-up includes one returning champion, Olympic athletes, two first-timers, elite pros, and more. Deemed as one of the longest running, most challenging, multi-sport events in the world, the iconic race will take place Sunday, June 11 in San Francisco.

Hosting 2,000 carefully selected competitors, the Triathlon will welcome Olympians, world champions, ardent age groupers and triathletes from all over the world to take over the streets and waters of San Francisco. Among these athletes are 13 USA Triathlon (USAT) licensed professionals including 2022 male pro division champion, Eric Lagerstrom. The list of pros also includes two-time Olympic champion Brent McMahon who holds the third fastest IRONMAN in history, as well as 2022 second place Escapee winner Jason West from the male pro division and 2022 third place winner Jodie Stimpson from the female pro division.

The list of pros also includes two rookies to watch, Miguel Mattox and Olivia Dietzel who will be participating in their first-ever Escape from Alactraz race. Local to the Bay Area, Mattox has had many outstanding achievements in his career including placing first in his overall group in the 70.3 Florida IRONMAN and winning overall in the USAT Draft Legal Sprint National Champion. The next newest Escapee is Olivia Dietzel who has no shortage of racing experience. In 2021, Dietzel set a new female course record and became the female champion of the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships and was also a qualifier for the Xtri World Championships in 2023.

Exploring all that San Francisco has to offer, triathletes will begin the race by embarking on a grueling 1.5-mile swim from Alcatraz Island to the shoreline of Marina Green. Following the swim, they will take on an 18-mile twisting bike ride through the Presidio, and an 8-mile trail run out to Baker Beach and back, while also encountering the infamous 200-plus-step Sand Ladder. Fans can experience the excitement of the race first-hand at the Little Marina Green, where the swim ends, and Marina Green where the athlete's transition area and finish line are easily visible.
